To keep collected samples alive prior to submission, keep it in a low nutrient water, such as the water in which it was found. If you want to use tap water, let it stand for 2-3 days prior to use, and then add liquid fertiliser solution at ~1:5-10 dilution over that recommended on the instructions. This reduces the chance of algal/fungi growth.
