To keep collected samples alive prior to submission, keep them in low-nutrient water, such as the water in which they were found. If you want to use tap water, let it stand for 2–3 days before use, then add liquid fertiliser solution at roughly a 1:5–10 dilution over that recommended on the instructions. This reduces the chance of algal or fungal growth.
